| Publication: Marock Magazine/Webzine Country: Morocco Date: September 2004 "Nervecell a deathcore act from UAE, their first album will be ready in october, a gr8 butchery is promised!! Here's an interview with Rami & James.... And also don't forget to take a look to their official website http://www.nervecell.tk/" MAROCKmag: Hi Rami and welcome to MAROCKmag, We'd like you to give us a fast overview about your band to our readers? Rami: Nervecell is a blend of hardcore and death metal with thrash metal touches. Our style is basically known as ‘deathcore’. We come from different backgrounds in metal which made a unique combination in our sound. The band had many line-up changes in the past which made us transform from heavy to heavier! We are now settled as a three piece band with no full time drummer due to lack of metal drummers were we live. The band is me (lead guitars), Barney (guitars) and James (growls & bass guitar) and when it comes to live shows we get session drummers. MAROCKmag: Why choosing Nervecell as your band’s name? Rami: Man, this is a question that doesn’t really have an answer *laughs*. To be short and simple the name was there before I joined the band. Barney came up with the name and until now its funny cos I don’t even know the proper reason for that name, but all what I can say is that “nerve cells” are important functional parts in humans so Barney had the idea of playing music that “gets on people’s nerves”…you know it was the HARDCORISH days back then *laugh*, so the name just came up! No other reason really from what I know, even when we have a more death metal sound in our music now, we decided to keep the name, as everyone out there knows us as NERVECELL and we didn’t wanna change the name. MAROCKmag: What are your music Influences? Rami: My own influence is death metal. I’ve been into this music when I first came into metal music. Then of course I’m into thrash metal, grindcore, hardcore, doom/death, progressive metal and jazz. James is into brutal shit *laugh*, anything brutal comes in handy James is into it! Barney is into death metal and thrash but he’s more into hardcore than the rest of us as it was his main influence in the band back then. In general our favourite bands which influenced us are Cannibal Corpse, Testament, Kreator, Bolt Thrower, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, Deicide and loads of known and unknown bands that are not worth mentioning *laugh* MAROCKmag: What are your lyrics talking about? James: My choice of lyrics in Nervecell are influenced by my thoughts and expressions through this world. I usually sit every now and then, thinking about my future and in the same time observing whats happening to this world. Feeling spiritually and mentally lost is the worst situation I ever faced. And upon this I write my lyrics due to this position. Due to the growls, my lyrics should be somewhat influenced and brought by death metal music. Excluding evil and anti-religion abstracts, most of my lyrics support inner anger of humanity, pain and destruction facing us in our everyday life. My lyrics will always have he same feeling and wont change concerning the subject I am focusing on (anger, hate, pain). They are messages, warnings hoping that one day people will jump to a conclusion and decide to change. As the songs come in hand, I do write the lyrics but there is always a man behind the scenes that add a finishing touch to them, and thats Rami. I wrote all the lyrics so far, I usually go for the building-the- structure, and Rami always comes up with our unique song titles. He is better visualizing whats being written and comes up with the titles or what i call them the finishing touches, or identity prints. In conclusion, my songs educate me in life, they are a strong source how i think towards our vague lifetime. And thats one of the only ways i can face the world, its like saying a speech to a group of people whom follow you hear you, and want to know what you are talking about. MAROCKmag: Could we know more about your coming album “Human Chaos” Rami: The idea of this album came very late this summer when we decided to compile our 4 years of hard work in music. I just came up to the guys and informed them that a good friend of mine who just recorded with this sound engineer who is pretty great and the sounding of my friend’s songs were amazing! In the UAE the studios here have sound engineers that don’t know SHIT in recording metal and since we found that person who is a great sound engineer, we decided to work with him. We thought of recording 6 songs, but due to the lack of time and cash we decided to record 5 songs. The songs are what we always wanted to record cos they bring together all the “best” songs that Nervecell wrote in the past 4 years. We re-recorded “Vastlands Of Abomination” and “The Darkened” which were released as singles in the past, and were totally in a different sound quality. This upcoming recording hopefully will have the sound that we want and the high end production with a punchy feel to the songs. We are recently done will all the rough tracks and I will start mixing along with the sound engineer in October. The release will be in mid October and hopefully things will go well. MAROCKmag: What's about the album tracks....any coments??? James: I will give you a brief idea of each song in our upcoming album; Signs of The End: Talks about the world coming to an end some day (armageddon) and no one can hide form his/her sins. It leaves a painful and foolish print in ones heart, but truth hurts. Vastlands of Abomination: Focuses on how much hate this world holds. Its hate that is destroying us everyday. When will we wake up out of this dream and think of reconstructing whats being damaged? The choice is ours but its greed, selfishness thats keeping us blind. The Darkened: This song leaves a great impact on me, its a song that talks about mysteries and phenomenons on earth, or what so called the 'Unknown' its a song that makes a person shiver once being understood. There is no light without darkness. Human Chaos & Demolition: Unlike other songs these are my favorites due to the fact that this is a two part song, its linked to Demolition, both songs suppress on the fact of wars and the desire of some groups, and its termination of both good and evil. Life must hold both inorder to be balanced, and we are here living and messing up the equation of life. MAROCKmag: What do you think about the metal scene in the arab world? Rami: It’s not really a metal scene more than it is a “music” scene, I think there are great bands and musicians out there but there is no real support by real people cos they are the minority, nor the musical mainstream cos nowadays in the Arab world all those who are into music are concerned about dance clubs and other homo musical activities *laugh*. The metal scene in the Arab world to be compared to Europe, America and Far East Asia is just a dream that’s getting closer to reality. I still don’t believe there’s a “real” metal scene out there in the Arab world, sadly. MAROCKmag: Any futur projects? Rami: We wanna concentrate on distributing this album, and we’ll start gigs 6 months from now, nothing else really. MAROCKmag: Do you have any idea about metal scene in Morocco? Rami: I heard there are gigs over there and by checking Marock, I just found out more about it, but from what I know the metal scene is bigger than where I stay. I hope to know more about all the bands out there. MAROCKmag: Thanx a lot for this interview, Akhir Kalima... Rami: Thanks to you, you’ve been great, and we hope that Nervecell CDs will soon reach Morocco to share our music all around. Keep it metal! |
